FUOYE FOI ACT COMMITTEE INAUGURATED

Following the promulgation into law of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2011, Federal University, and Oye- Ekiti has inaugurated an FOI committee. This is in line with the Federal Government directive that Chief Executives of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAS) are to set up a Freedom of Information Act Committee and a Unit/Desk to handle FOI matters relating to their establishments.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Asuzu, therefore appointed Professor Benjamin Omolayo of the Department of Psychology as Chairman of the committee, with the University Legal Officer Barrister, Amaechi Eni, as member. Other members of the committee are Coordinator, Information and Protocol Unit, Mr Chris Ukaegbu, and Principal Confidential Secretary, Mr O.O. Tawose-Babajide. Faith Oluwatade of the Registry Department is Secretary to the committee.

The committee’s terms of reference are as follow:-

  1. To handle freedom of information (FOI) matters relating to FUOYE.
  2. To request for information from public institutions/agencies on issues that may be of concern to FUOYE, including her staff and students.
  3. To liaise with the university administration in order to ensure up-to-date and accurate free flow of information in and outside the university.
  4. To obtain, analyse and feed the university administration with relevant and accurate information, for quick decision-making.
  5. To liaise with the university administration before giving out any sensitive information that may be of concern to any individual, staff, students and the university.
  6. To carry out any other assignment related to FOI as it concerns FUOYE that may be assigned to the committee by the university administration.
  7. To submit written reports to the Vice Chancellor regarding the activities of the committee as occasions demand or at least once every quarter.

The committee has since swung into action with a strong resolve to justify the confidence reposed on it by the Vice Chancellor. No stone will be left unturned, according to a member of the committee who spoke to Innovate! on the basis of anonymity, to solicit information on matters that would enhance the well-being of all students and staff as well as the well-being and growth of the young university. These matters according to our source include issues on pension deductions as well as National Housing Fund, admissions, and any other such matters of general interest.

The committee, which meets once every month, it was revealed, would soon be forwarding some of its resolutions to management for considerations.
