COREN lauds FUOYE Engineering Faculty.

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has applauded the steady progress recorded by the Engineering Faculty of Federal University Oye-Ekiti.

A seventeen-man team of COREN which was in the institution for a pre-accreditation visit expressed satisfaction with the efforts being made by the young institution to ensure the production of quality engineering graduates; the council also expressed its delight over FUOYE’s decision to offer Mechatronics, a course that is rarely found even in some older universities across the country.

UntitledSpeaking through its team leader, Professor J. O. Olajide, during an exit meeting with the university management team after the team’s facility tour of the Engineering Faculty and other related sites, COREN also commended the cordial relationship between FUOYE and the Ikole community where the Engineering Faculty is located. Professor Olajide said it is such cordiality that resulted in the donation of a 350KVA power generating set to the faculty by the Ikole community and urged the university to continue to sustain the cordiality.

Furthermore, the COREN spokesperson said the Council was equally pleased with the collaborations FUOYE has with some older institutions especially in the use of some of the institutions’ facilities for practical work. FUOYE currently collaborates with the Engineering Faculties of Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti and Federal University of Technology, Akure as well as Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI), Ilesa, Osun State for practical studies for the students.

COREN’s mandate in FUOYE, according to Professor Olajide, was to strengthen and enhance the development of engineering programmes in the young institution.

In its overall assessment it advised the university to improve in office spaces and accommodation for Engineering staff, especially lecturers. It also encouraged the university to expedite action on Engineering drawing studio and books.

It also recommended the recruitment of more staff so as to meet up with the expansion stride of the institution.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Asuzu, said he was encouraged by the record of COREN’s facility tour which according to him would spur the faculty to work harder towards the realization of its set goals in line with the Council’s professional standards.

Prof. Asuzu decried the paucity of funds which inhibited the realization of most of the issues raised by COREN. Those issues he said were already factored into the blueprint of FUOYE’s Engineering Faculty. As a way out of the perennial financial difficulties, the institution had organised an equipment launch which had yielded some positive results for the faculty.

He revealed that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) has provided a grant for academic staff training and this would further enhance the staff development efforts of the university.

On the need for more academic staff in the faculty, the Vice Chancellor said it has been the desire of FUOYE to have more but there appears to be dearth of quality manpower across the country. The University, according to Prof. Asuzu, did a massive recruitment drive for lecturers in engineering but could not get the required number. So the university had to recourse to sabbatical staff to bridge the gap in the short term while pursuit for qualified staff continues. He expressed the institution’s readiness to employ qualified academics where and when available.

The Vice Chancellor also announced that the faculty library was going to be upgraded as the institution had received sixty million Naira (N60m) grant for books; so plans were underway to equip both the central library and the Faculty of Engineering library.

On the completion of the faculty building, Professor Asuzu assured that the September deadline was realizable and hinted it could even be completed before the dateline.

engineering faculty and COREN, and solicited the latter’s support in the accreditation of the engineering courses; “I plead with you to tell your Council to fix a date for accreditation since the students cannot graduate without accreditation.” he concluded.

The Dean Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Chris Bolu, had earlier assured the team that the reason for the delay in the completion of the faculty building was not internal but external and beyond the control of the faculty, or the institution for that matter.

Untitled2Earlier the spokesperson, during his introductory remarks, had said that the Act setting up COREN was all about quality control for staff and facilities in engineering faculties of institutions of higher learning and in any other such environment wherein engineering is practiced. He had also assured that accreditation was aimed at partnership for growth and not an exercise in witch-hunting, announcing that only COREN can give verdict on the team’s visit. the university. It appreciated the Vice Chancellor on his favourable disposition towards engineering, though not an engineer himself, and for sustaining the legacy of the pioneer Vice Chancellor, Professor Chinedu Nebo, stating that FUOYE is the only university among the new twelve universities offering engineering courses. The COREN visit lasted from July 6 to 9, 2014.
