FUOYE 2014/2015 Orientation Programme for Fresh Students

The orientation programme for new students admitted for the 2014/2015 academic session kicked off on Wednesday January 14, 2015 and ended on Friday January 16. Events mapped out for the programme included lectures and talks on various academic and related issues as concerned the students.

During the opening ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Asuzu, represented by the Dean Student Affairs, Dr O. O. Fasoranti expressed delight at the commencement of the 2014/2015 academic session and commended the news students for beating the hyper-competition for admission into Nigerian universities, and indeed into Federal University, Oye-Ekiti. According to him, it meant that they were the best.

The Vice Chancellor pointed out to the enthusiastic students that the orientation was to acquaint them with their rights and privileges, as well as their duties and obligations within the campus. He informed them that the university owed them the obligation to train them and prepare them to be useful within the world market for human resources. He therefore urged them to take their studies serious and avoid drugs, cultism, examination malpractices and other irresponsible conducts that were capable of truncating their academic pursuit.

Drawing from an allegory of the biblical exodus, Professor Asuzu reminded the freshmen that their admission only meant that they had left Egypt but were still far away from the promised land. Still using biblical lessons, the Vice Chancellor enjoined the new students to always be prepared, like the wise virgins, and avoid any loopholes that could prevent them from realizing their aim.

The Ag. Registrar of the university, Mr. Daniel Adeyemo, represented by Mr. D. A. Fatuase spoke to the students on the missions and visions of the university. He invited them to think of the things they gave up for this academic pursuit and urged them to define their purpose of being in the university, and then work hard to achieve it.

Speaking on quality assurance, The Head Ikole Campus and Director Academic Planning, Professor Adeolu A. Aganga, informed the students that the only objective of a student was to study and pass out in flying colours. She therefore called on them (especially the female students) to avoid all distractions and face their studies and thus pass with good grades. Professor Aganga cited Professor Grace Alele Williams, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, herself and some others as examples of Nigerian women who shunned men and fashion while in the university and came out to be reckoned as reputable members of society. She assured the students that the quality assurance programme was one designed to ensure that teaching methods, strategies and practices, as well as student involvement/participation were taken into consideration in the evaluation of teaching success.

Other speakers at the occasion were the Dean Faculty of Sciences, Professor Sylvia Uzochukwu, Dean Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Olusegun Oladimeji, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, represented by H. O. D. Civil Engineering, Professor Oluwagbenga Amu and Dean Student Affairs, Dr. O. O. Fasoranti. All the speakers believed that the time to begin to build their grades was ‘now’ and encouraged the students to work hard for their success.

Taking time off his tight schedule the Vice Chancellor was there in person, on the third and final day of the programme, to address the clearly elated students. He assured the freshmen of FUOYE’s readiness to offer them an all-round qualitative education, and enjoined them to position themselves well to receive the institution’s thorough academic grounding necessary for a successful career after school.
