WHEN ADAMMA HOSTED PROF. ASUZU

The students of Theatre and Media Arts Department, Federal University Oye Ekiti, on Wednesday April 17, performed their notable drama, Adamma. This edition was grand performance in honour of the new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Asuzu, who would be watching the play for the first time.

The play, ‘Adamma’ is an adaptation of Wole Soyinka’s playThe Lion and the Jewel. It startedat about 300pm and ended at about 5.3Opm. The play is a satire which opens with a beautiful young girl, Adamma whose beauty is renowned, and whom many men from different tribes and occupations seek and woo.

However, she gives attention only to those who can satisfy her monetary quest. Eventually, she falls into the hands of a much older but loud-mouthed rich man who flaunts his wealth in much bombastic speech that borders on irritation. Through the complicity of the eldest of the man’s three wives, Adamma is lured into the man’s apartment. The man rapes her but affirming that he is a real man’, she consents to be his fourth wife.

In the course of events, Ezego, for that is the man’s name, is shot dead during his marriage ceremony with Adamma. Ethnic suspicion and strife breaks out as Adammas tribesmen suspect that one of her rejected suitors (of other ethnic origins) must have killed Ezego. It takes the sagacious handling of the matter by the Igwe (traditional ruler) of the community to quell what would have become a multi-ethnic war after a woman has been murdered in the market place.

It is later discovered that Ezego’s business associate who has felt sidelined in a business deal has sent assassins after him. The play ends in a didactic note in which the Igwe enjoins all tribes concerned to learn to live in harmony and eschew all acts that militate against peaceful co-existence.

The fact that Adamma is, throughout the play garbed in a simple attire patterned in the green-white-green of the national flag speaks volumes on the interplay of cultural and ethnic cleavages Ofl the Nigerian entity. The play is also interspersed with beautiful melodious songs that solicit peace and understanding.

The portrayal, through dresses and dialects injected into speeches of Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and Edo ethnic tribes of Nigeria, also indicates that this play is at once a didactic rebuke on the elements that breed destabilisation in Nigeria and a gentle invitation to peaceful and harmonious c-oexistence.

The Vice Chancellor sat through the play together with some other principal staff of the university. One could notice that he was impressed at the performance of the students. As he noted at the end of the drama, if year one and two students could put up such a marvelous performance, the sky would be their stepping stone when they get to final year.

The Vice Chancellor encouraged the students and promised that the university would assist the students to perform the play outside the university.
