Universities are centres of excellence in all fields of human learning and development, and as such, is undoubtedly one of the vehicles of carrying these development efforts. There is no disputing the fact that sports has become one of the most unifying factors amongst people of varying cultural heritages more so as it has assumed international status, consequently commanding global attention.
It is against this backdrop and in a bid to contribute its own quota towards sports development that the authorities of Federal University Oye-Ekiti recently provided indoor sporting facilities for the recreation of staff and students. These facilities include standard table tennis board and kits, scrabble, chess, draughts board and Ayo-olopon, a Yoruba local game. While officially declaring the sporting equipment ready for use, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Asuzu, expressed his administration's readiness to support sporting activities fully on campus. He added that he would ensure the speedy completion of the ongoing reconstruction of the football pitches on the two campuses.
The Vice Chancellor remarked that since the institution's work force is young, strong and energetic, it would be most ideal for the university to also have a strong football team for both staff and students that would represent the institution at NUGA games in the future.
He disclosed that the welfare and development of staff is of utmost concern to the management, while reiterating the fact that the institution is nascent and as such, sports lovers and aficionados should be patient as management works to build a world class university that would accommodate all facets of human development. He also declared every Wednesday as official day for sporting activities on campus from 12 noon.
The highpoint of the event was a game of table tennis between the vice chancellor and the registrar, and of course the chief executive carried the day in a gallant style. Other winners were Mr. Gabriel Okoli of Computer Science Department who won the chess game, Mr. Sam Adeleye of Maintenance Unit who won the male category of ayo- olopon and Mrs. Ademolaju who won the female category of ayo-olopon. In scrabble, Mr. Gbenga Ogundare of Academic Planning Unit won the contest while Mr. Akomolafe Omotayo of Medical Centre and Mr. Femi Abioluwa from Security Unit had the day in the draughts game.
