It was a special occasion for the maiden presentation of medals to deserving university students who won laurels at the concluded Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA) and Ekiti State Higher Institutions’ Games (ESHIGA). The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Soremekun expressed elation over the wonderful performance exhibited by the athletes given the reason that the athletes that represented the university were only debutants in the slated competition. He stated that his administration would support sporting activities in the institution adding that management would be ready to sponsor all sporting competitions.

The Don enjoined the sports committee to keep up with the task of driving sports development in the university. In his words, “sports is an integral part of any scholarly endeavor because a sound body is a sound mind. We intend to promote a healthy balance between academics and sports”.

He congratulated all the students and sports leaders who took part in the 2017 NUGA games for making the institution proud and encouraged all those who could not win laurels to work harder next time.

The presentation of medals was a sequel to the earlier inauguration of the university’s ten man sports committee chaired by Dr. Dosu Malomo to oversee and administer the entire sporting activities of the university. Other members of the committee are; Dr. Akinsorotan Ademola, Mr. Dairo Fatuase,  Mr. Abiodun Alamu, Mr. Okafor Chinedu, Miss Folake Ajewole, Mr. Johnson Ogundele as secretary.

According to Chairman of the committee, Dr. Malomo Dosu, the inaugural meeting was centred on evolving well defined sports policy that would drive sports development in the young institution. He also stated that the committee was well poised towards ensuring the provision of standard sporting facilities for adequate and result oriented preparations for competitions. It also deliberated on key possible short term goals for recreational activities for physical and mental development of staff and students. He equally decried the inadequate funding Nigerian universities receive in terms of sporting activities and maintained that adequate funding for competitions on the part of management are necessary tools for sports development. Dr. Malomo assured that the sports committee would work towards developing coaching crew for the various indoor and outdoor games adding that a sub technical committee had been appointed to ascertain the current status of some of the available sporting facilities on the two campuses. He assured all sports participants that there would be equitable representation of the both campuses in sports activities.
