CREATIVE LEADERS WANTED

Whether in the circus square or along the athletics track fields, for the speculators to continually cheer, a given team must maintain a clear systematic cohesion: and this is made possible largely by the dexterity of the team coach or as a second option, the captain.

Incontrovertibly, an athletic team and an academic institution have a uniform denominator- each must have an orbit on which it sits and resolves as a system. The orbit in question here is leadership. Leadership therefore, is everything in an entity: when right, the entity is runaway success; when wrong, it is an abysmal failure!

Histories of world's enduring organisations are dovetailed not only on the creative dreams of their founders, but more so on their acumen plus strength of character – these eventually propelled them to confront the odds inherent in starting in the first place. Name them: Asa Candler bought on may 8, 1886, the now Coca-Cola formula from a poor pharmacist, John Pembert, and has since turned it into the most famous beverage in the world through sure-fire leadership.

Richard Branson, founder and head of the Virgin Group, was only 16 years old when he began his global brand in 1966. And our own Aliko Dangote began in 1977, at the age of 24, his now world-class organisation. While it is one thing to ever start, the real task is in being to provide the needed leadership to sustain the vision.

In the turbulent world of Nigeria's higher education, two names have continuously made the list of the nation's phenomenal managers of University education – professors Chinedu Ositadinma Nebo and Isaac Uzoma Asusu.

While the first is now a household name, given his streak succes in all his public assignments, the second has nonetheless, made his mark – if only from a somewhat behind the scene perspective, as a sine qua non lieutenant.

Prof. Asusu indeed, was crucial to the globally celebrated success of prof. Nebo's vice chancellorship of UNN- 2004 -2009, and repeated same feat in the current leadership of UNN- as led by Prof. Barth Okolo, in which he was also a Deputy Vice Chancellor, until his present posting.

Either as a result of his reticent nature, or his avowed policy of never talking the shine off his boss, Prof. Asuzu was almost non-existent in the vast world of internet – and by this we mean the usual catchy mini biography that markets its subjects – despite his dizzying professional from the role of conductor to driver on Monday, February 18, 2013 by the Nigerian government. Asusu is therefore, classical study on humility and loyalty; an adherent to hierarchical protocol.

This special edition of innovate! Pertinently focused on the two men that have held the rein of FUOYE's past and present leadership. FUOYE is exceptionally blessed to have had these rare gems atop its affaires at this period of its formation!

Unveiling Asuzu; Extolling Nebo …, is aimed at unmasking the personality of the vice Chancellor – as gathered from the man himself, a former student of his, Dr Anya Kalu and most interestingly, his own biological son, Dr Onyekachi Asuzu. This edition also catalogues glowing tributes on his immediate predecessor, Prof Nebo, (now Nigeria's Minister of power), by some members of the FUOYE community.

By the way, this publication is probably the only one of its kind (university news organs), that adopts the open style of by-lines on their stories. This is so because it is a training forum for would-be writers. We believe that with the contributions having their names attached to their efforts, they would be motivated enough to want to aspire to become confident if not professional writers. This pursuant to the FUOYE tradition of professional pro-activeness.

Efforts have been made to ensure that most activities in FUOYE since February this year are highlighted. It is a memento of sort-as everyone would find something of interest in this edition
