FUOYE 2ND MATRICULATION CEREMONY

You are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. (I Thessa. 5:5).

Nothing less than the above Biblical quotation sums up the aptness of the advice of the Vice Chancellor, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Isaac Asuzu, to the new students of the institution during the 2nd matriculation ceremony to formally admit them into their respective programmes on Friday March 22, 2013.

The ceremony started at about 9:50am with matriculants filing into the university auditorium in their unique Faculty colours with Deans and Officers leading their respective columns.

While the new students and their guests awaited the arrival of the Vice Chancellor and other principal officers of the university, the duo of Winner Nwaoge and Ndidi Ibenyenwa, the comperes from Information and Protocol Unit, amidst rib-cracking jokes, provided vital information in aid of the day’s business.

At exactly 10:12am, there was a spontaneous stirring in the assemblage – shifting and adjusting indicating the approach of the Vice Chancellor and his team to the venue. No sooner had they mounted the podium, than a beautiful rendition of the Nigerian National Anthem – followed by Arise & Shine, the University’s anthem, extraordinarily performed by the University choir (apparently in honour of the Vice Chancellor who was appearing for the first to any formal function of the university), before they sat down.

Thereupon, the new chief executive was invited by the University’s Acting Registrar, Mr. Daniel Adeyemo, to declare open the ceremony. The Vice Chancellor then rose to the occasion but not without first expressing profound joy at the opportunity to personally induct the new students into the FUOYE community. He reminded his audience of the fact that he was conducting his first matriculation as the Vice Chancellor of FUOYE, and therefore saw himself also as a matriculant. In a fatherly manner, he congratulated matriculants as according to him, gaining admission into University nowadays is no mean feat, considering the growing of seekers to the dwindling chances. He particularly thanked the parents and guardians of the matriculants for their support and encouragement, urging them to not relent until their good becomes better and their better becomes best!

Quoting William Shakespearein one of his books, he said that life is a general drama of pains where happiness is an occasional episode, and proceeded in his fatherly advice to the students that life like a swinging pendulum, oscillates like a turbulent cyclone and is always full of patchwork of smiles and stress –each emotion fertilizing and enriching the other and as such, basking in the euphoria of having scaled the first hurdle should blindfold them to the fact that it is not yet over until it is over. Therefore, for them to graduate magna cum laude, they must intensify their efforts.

Prof Asuzu started that “academic activities in the University will go steps beyond the traditional teaching and learning methods, to translating research results to tangible products and to that regard, emphasis will be on equipping the students with entrepreneurial and leadership skills to be able to stand on your own and be employers of labour, eventually.”

The Vice Chancellor later read his riot acts to be students.” The University has zero tolerance for cultism; brigandage, hooliganism and vandalism, and anyone caught involved in any of these, especially cultism, will be expelled no matter how highly influential the parents may be. Under no condition should you embark on wilful destruction of University property”. He continue “As civilized people, we must find legitimate and rational ways to express our feelings without undue recourse to violence and senseless destruction of public property.

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti awards its degree only to those found worthy in character and learning. Thus you should eschew all acts capable of truncating your academic pursuit” He warned. The Vice Chancellor assured them that all resources –materials and human, at the University management’s disposal will be deployed to ensure their stay at FUOYE is worth its while.

After the Vice Chancellor’s address, the students took the matriculation Oath in alphabetical order according to their respective Faculties. And with that the curtain was drawn on the event. It was all jubilation, wining and dining thereafter.
