FUOYE LEADS IN PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT

At a stage when its contemporaries are just starting to construct their permanent sites, FUOYE, true to its quest to be best among its equals, takes another step forward in putting up more physical structures in what is now known as the phase 2 development project.

Thursday March 14, 2013 is remarkable in the burgeoning history of the young University .On that day, the director, physical planning of the university, Prof. Olugbenga Amu, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Asuzu, handed over to the contractors the four sites earmarked for the FUOYE phase 2 development projects.

This was after a crucial meeting of all the consultant/contractors with the Vice chancellor and the physical planning unit and other top officials of FUOYE, Professionals, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) consultants, the surveyor and geotechnical consultants.

In fact, it was a robust gathering of all the stakeholders in the stage 2 project after which they proceeded to the forest on the same day for the handover of sites to the contractors, picking their way through the access road created by the surveyor.

The four projects within the phase 2 development programme included the Library Building which was won by Messers Dumaco Best Properties Ltd, (Abuja) at the cost of N220m. The central Administrative Block was won by Tripod Resources Ltd, costing N510m. Two of the projects, the Faculty Building and the ICT Centre went to Multi Engineering Solution and Design Ltd at the cost of N998m and N220m respectively.

According to Prof. Amu, the delivery period of three of the projects is 30 weeks i.e 7.5months while the delivery date for the Faculty Building is 40weeks i.e 10months.

It is therefore expected that these projects would be ready for use, latest by December this year.

This will be a welcome development for the staff and students of FUOYE who for now, make do with the minimal available spaces for work and studies. Hopefully, handlers of the projects will ensure a timely delivery; more so as the University is hot on the heels.

An innovate! visit to the sites revealed that three of the projects were at the level of trench excavation, except the ICT complex that was still at clearing stage. Speaking to this reporter, the engineer on the site of the central administrative block, Engr. Segun Adeosun assured that the project would be ready for use by November this year, all things been equal. He mentioned delay in the release of funds and vagaries of weather as among factors that could delay the timely completion of the project. About twenty men were seen digging vigorously at the foundation.

An architectural drawing of the building showed the VC's office and its sub-units including the information and protocol unit, the Registrar’s office, the Audit and Account unit as well as the Student Affairs unit. It was much the same thing at the other sites where men were seen digging the trenches for the foundation. The Engineer at the Library complex site, Arch. Barthilimew Essiet, assured that the project would be delivered by October but hinted delay of funds could hinder timely delivery of the project. According to him, “we are prepared to work under any weather conditions to ensure that the project is completed in time”.

One might wonder if the project are actually in progress since, from the university vicinity, there is nothing to indicate that such project are going on. However, the sites are accessed through a road behind the university. This was the thoughtful resolution reached by the University authorities and the contractors on the understanding that heavy-duty vehicle should not be allowed to run on the newly constructed University road, lest its gets defaced.
