NEBO: TRIBUTES FROM FUOYE COMMUNITY

- Mr Ikechukwu Areh, Director, Procurement

My first meeting with Professor Chinedu Nebo was in 2004 brokered by a mutual friend. Since then we have been meeting purely on social occasions. I respect him a great deal. Even though 1 was leaving UNN when he was coming in, 1, nevertheless, followed his career with utmost interest.

What I don’t like about him? Absolutely nothing! I know that as a human being, he must have his faults just like anyone else. But I do not think that in his dealing with people, he allows his fault to come to the fore. Most people, after a while or in some circumstances, would allow their shortc omings to come to the fore, but I think he has succeeded in keeping his foibles, if any, under absolute check.

Does Nebo have qualities I would persuade others to emulate? Yes, the spirit of fairness and firmness in perfect blend. He is a very fair and firm man and one of the few honest men around right now in government. He likes getting things done, no matter the challenges facing him. And he more or less does not rely on his innate abilities to get things done. Just like he would always say, “I believe strongly in the Grace of God.”

Whatever his station, I would advise him just to continue being himself. He cannot change now, not anymore. And he said so “You don’t learn to use your left hand at old age.” So, my advice to him is that he should continue being himself.

The greatest legacy that I will say he left here is the spirit of Neboism as encapsulated in the FUOYE brand. And! believe that the new Vice Chancellor is going to imbibe the spirit of FUOYE even as he forges ahead.

Missing him? Yes, his presence, but not his spirit, because spirits are built in men, not in structures.

Nebo’s secret for’’ success is God”    -Mrs Omolola Obabire, Head, Internal Audit.

Any time I have had cause to talk about Prof. Nebo, I have always told the audience that he is a human being. His leadership attributes are so superb because no matter how bad the situation is painted to him about a person or a department, in this case, the Audit Department of FUOYE, he would deal with the situation as a good leader would, by giving all concerned benefit of the doubt. He will always hear your own side of the story, take facts from your explanations and thereupon take action only after a thorough thought. Besides, he is a man of God whose belief and dependency in God shows in his everyday activities.

Without Prof. Nebo, and despite the fact that I did not know Prof. Asuzu before now, my little interaction with Professor Asuzu has convinced me that he will step fully into the shoes of Nebo without palpable difficulties. And even without the physical presence of Prof. Nebo, with the kind of support we are going to give Prof. Asuzu, I am sure he will not just maintain, but improve on the existing foundation. God helping us, we will surpass Nebo’s achievements!

Professor Nebo’s departure will not deter us because he inculcated in us the ability and willingness to dream and achieve; we had the habit of taking giant stripes with him, so his absence will not deter us because it was a collective dream. And I am sure God is going to help us because He is always there for those who believe in Him.

Nebo, A Noble Creature Of God - Michael Afolabi, University Librarian

Professor Chinedu Nebo is a friend I ever had. He will be the second Vice Chancellor I worked with who will ever remain green in my memory. The first one is Prof. Makunjuola, The former Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University of Ile-Ife. Prof. Nebo is a man of impeccable integrity, a diligent workaholic, and highly focused man.

There are Christians in name, who in the real sense, are only religious people. But Prof. Nebo is a noble creature of the Almighty. If we should have more of his type in this country, Nigeria will be better. If not for a man like Prof .Nebo, this university would have long been forgotten.

As I said at the beginning, Prof. Nebo is a friend I ever had, a man who fully supported any proposal I wrote on how to move the institution forward. He is not the type on whose office door I would knock before entering, even if there were people with him. He is a humble man of high intellectual competence as well asa peace maker.

It was not surprising to me when I heard of his appointment as one of the Honourable Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because of the stuff he is made of. But I felt very sad because he was leaving this institution at its very stage of incubation but, on the other hand, when I look back, I realize my sadness is selfish. Indeed, this great institution has gifted a first class manager, to the entire country. One thing I know is that professor Nebo will perform, he will deliver, and he will change the power sector by the Grace of God.

Professor Nebo is not just a priest: he is a priest in words and in deeds. Oh! I miss a noble creature of God! However, I believe that the entire FUOYE community and I will find the same qualities in Prof. Isaac Asuzu.

Nebo Believes In Wooing Nigerian Professionals Back Home” - Dr Rufus Akindola, HOD GST Unit.

I was trying to settle down in the University of Wales in the UK, upon leaving the University of Melbourne in Australia, when I met Prof. Chinedu Nebo who encouraged me to come back to Nigeria to help develop the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE). When the National Universities Commission came in, I decided to come back to Nigeria on May 2012, and resumed work with FUOYE in June 2012.

Prof. Chinedu Nebo is a man of his words and has been a very good man: he is a visionary leader, full of action. In fact, I have so much respect for his wisdom, courage and optimism. I also will not forget to commend his sense of humility and charity. Within the short time I worked with him, he taught me how to be honest, hardworking and God-fearing. He is a man of many virtues

As an unrepentant patriot, he believes in Nigeria, and so constantly woos Nigerian professionals in the diaspora to come home to develop the nation.

Prof. Nebo championed the counselling thera in Nigeria’s mod university system”

Alexander Eze, Ph.D, Director, Counselling Unit.

I travelled overseas in 1978 for studies. There I had MA and PhD degrees in Psychology at Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas. I also had my MSc degree in Industrial Technology at TSU, Houston, TX and earned my B.Chem degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND. I have written extensively and conducted training and seminars in adolescent behaviour and management as well as in the general field of behavioural health. I came back to Nigeria on an invitation; I was invited by the former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) to come set up a Counselling Unit more of clinic, which was proactive and innovative on his part because this was way before the Ministry of Education issued a mandate that every University in Nigeria must have a Counselling Unit. That was visionary on his part—implementing it before the mandate was passed!

In the history of Psychology and Counselling, we are proud to say that FUOYE is the first of her peers to have a full blown Counselling Unit, and we are also making headway with the Psychology Department. Prof Nebo is a visionary person and has the capacity to mobilize; he is influential in his ways of managing people and resources, very knowledgeable and understanding in his way of dealing with his subordinates and managing projects that makes him an excellent administrator.

He is goal oriented and focused. Anyone who has the privilege to work with him will attest to his ability to motivate and nurture people by bringing out the best in them. He is a devoted Christian and this is evident in his administrative system.

Also as a psychologist, I administered a test on him which showed that he was a born leader - very intelligent person and always seeking to acquire knowledge. He is creative; he turns all his opportunities into fun loving situations. Coming to corporate governance, he reasons beyond most people while most people are at their basic fundamental morale reasoning, he is at the tail end where he looks at the big picture a view to providing answers, he wants to make a change not only to the environment but also in the individual; what he preaches is what he does and that makes him a good leader. At the moral reasoning, he is at the Sixth stage, whilst most Nigerians are at the first and second stages, and other parts of the world are on the third and fourth stages of reasoning according to Kleberg.

Any challenges working with him? He only challenged me to do better and brought out the best in me, not just for the growth of FUOYE, but also for my personal growth. He opened my eyes to see an aspect of the health profession which I never saw before coming back to Nigeria; I was not aware that the problem facing Nigeria is of this magnitude physically and emotionally. Like I said before, Prof. Nebo is a born leader; and good leaders don’t use one leadership style. He could be autocratic but still democratic what could be seen as autocratic democracy - if you will. He applies more of leadership skills, and moves from one style to another, he is not stagnant; he has vision and is filled with different intelligent ideas. He is not a commander; he is humble, accessible, persuader, a pacesetter, visionary coach, democrat who operates an open door policy. He is a role model: who does what he preaches.

Prof Nebo is a health conscious man indeed”. - Modupe Orire,Chief Nursing OfficerFUOYE Health Centre:

All put in one, Prof. Nebo is a very wonderful and an accessible person. He ensured that the Health Centre was provided with all the necessary medical equipment in the laboratory to make it functional. He also employed qualified staff. The Health Centre has two ambulances - one at Ikole and the second at the main campus a First Aid box in the Pre-degree Centre. Prof Nebo carried out regular checks on them. All these were to ensure that the students and staff had meaningful first aid treatment in case of any emergency. The Staff and students help in making the work easy by giving their maximum corporation. We are grateful to them. I never had any frustrating challenge working with Prof Nebo. He listened and approved anything needed in the Health Centre at every point just to make the work easy.

Prof. Nebo, a welfare-minded leader. - Mr Akin Fatoye, Senior Security Officer

Prof Chinedu Nebo is an excellent administrator who gives room for the young ones to grow despite their shortcomings and rewards hard work. He always works towards perfection though God is the only one perfect. He is one of the most incorruptible men 1 have ever met, besides my late father. He represents goodwill and kindness and will always take out time to enquire about your family’s welfare. I enjoyed every moment I spent with him. As an ex-military man, I see him as one of the most security conscious men in Nigeria. His intelligence gathering method is superb. By virtue of his position and relationships, he is at vantage position to nip seemingly volatile situations before they escalate. He treated the security department with respect and did not undermine the positive efforts of any security staff.
