'ADD VIRTUE TO YOUR LEARNING'

Prof. I.U. Asuzu, Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Oye- Ekiti, charges matriculating students.

The Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Professor Isaac U. Asuzu, has advised matriculating students of the institution to add virtue to their learning. Addressing 550 fresh students of the university at the Institution’s 3rd Matriculation Ceremony, held at the University’s Main Auditorium at Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Asuzu said the degree of the University will only be awarded to students that have been found worthy in character and learning, hence the advise for the students to add value to their learning.

The Vice Chancellor had earlier announced that of over 8,000 applicants for admission, only 550 were privileged to be admitted to the University. This fact he said called for sober reflection. He however admitted that the privileged few owed their opportunity to brilliant performances at both the University Matriculation Examination (UME) and the Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, popularly called post UTME.

While congratulating matriculating students for their remarkable achievements, the eminent Professor of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, was also quick to urge them to make the best of the golden opportunity presented by their admission into FUOYE. “You need to stay conscious of the expectations of your parents as well as the enormous sacrifices they are making to see you through school at this point in time. You must therefore make personal commitment not to let them down,” he advised.

Speaking further, he said the new students have come into the university at a very remarkable time in her history and this is obvious from the many on-going construction projects aimed at providing additional classrooms, laboratories, theatres, studios and office spaces needed to enhance learning and research in the university.’ They are part of a properly articulated programme of improving the environment in which we live, work and study. Remember, it is impossible to make 21st century citizens out of those who live and study in a 20th century environment ‘, he concluded.

He further warned the students to shun all forms of cultism, because Federal University Oye-Ekiti has a zero tolerance policy on cultism and anyone caught involved in cultism will be expelled and, thereafter, prosecuted. ‘There are a number of legitimate associations which are registered with the Department of Student Affairs. Feel free to register and participate in the activities of these genuine associations’ he advised them.

Speaking as special guest at the occasion, the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, expressed joy for being part of the historic event. He saw himself not as a visitor to the university but as a grand host. He reminded the students that he still had fond memory of his own matriculation of over thirty years ago. He went on to remind them of the particular privilege they had of scaling the outrageous hurdle out of over 8000 candidates out of which only 7.5% got admission.

Governor Fayemi further said the ‘university is a place of universe of ideas and a place of knowledge but knowledge without good character is nothing’, reminding the students that Ekiti State is the fountain of knowledge and as such does not joke with education.

He promised that the State would collaborate with the growing university in whatever way the state’s lean resources can afford. Earlier the Vice Chancellor had conducted the governor round on-going projects in the Phase two development plan of the university.
