The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has ushered in a new chapter in its student leadership as Ajayi Olusegun Samuel, popularly known among students as “AOS The Unifier,” emerged as the newly elected President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), promising to unite the student body and deliver impactful governance.
Ajayi, a 400-level student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, secured victory in the university-wide electronic election conducted across FUOYE’s campuses, with the collation Centre in Ado-Ekiti serving as the election situation room.
The exercise was observed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Tajudeen Bolanle Opoola, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Strategic Partnerships, Research, Innovation and Linkages (SPRIL), Prof. Babatunde Afolabi, underscoring the university’s commitment to a transparent electoral process.
Announcing the results, Chairman of the Students Electoral Body (SEB), Mr. Odelami Moses Ayotunde of the Department of History and International Studies, disclosed that 16,366 students were accredited to participate in the poll.
Describing the election as one of the smoothest in the institution’s history, Ayotunde praised the process as transparent, credible and seamless.
Moments after being declared winner, an emotional Ajayi expressed gratitude to God and the student community for entrusting him with the mandate to lead.
“I give glory to God. Honestly, it feels great. I am very happy and deeply fulfilled. This moment feels almost surreal because of the journey leading here,” he said.
“After years of commitment, sacrifice and consistent service, especially over the last four years, seeing it culminate in this victory is both emotional and rewarding. I am truly honoured that the work has finally spoken for itself.”
Ajayi attributed his victory to a track record of service and visible impact rather than mere campaign promises.
“Students saw consistency, service and impact. They saw evidence, not just promises. That is what built the trust,” he stated.
Widely known for his passion for student development, entrepreneurship, public speaking and welfare advocacy, Ajayi has built a reputation as an accessible and people-oriented leader, earning admiration across the university community.
Outlining his vision, the President-elect declared that his administration would be anchored on what he described as “absolute unity,” aimed at strengthening cohesion across campuses, faculties and departments.
“As the Unifier, I intend to run a government that prioritizes every student. We are stronger when we stand and speak with one voice,” he said.
“My administration will focus on inclusion, togetherness and collective progress. We will also build structures and programmes that will ensure continuity and sustainable impact beyond our tenure.”
Ajayi identified student welfare, security and healthcare as the immediate priorities of his administration, stressing that academic excellence can only thrive in an environment where students are safe, healthy and adequately supported.
To address welfare concerns, the president-elect pledged strategic engagement with key stakeholders. According to him, my administration will work with landlords and community leaders to tackle arbitrary rent increases and other forms of exploitation facing students living off-campus.
He also promised to engage transport operators on fair transportation costs while strengthening collaboration with security agencies and host communities to enhance safety around student settlements.
On academics, the President-elect vowed to advocate improved learning facilities and increased access to educational resources to support students’ academic pursuits.
Ajayi further assured students that his administration would maintain a cordial and productive relationship with the university management while remaining steadfast in defending students’ interests.
“My approach will be dialogue-driven. The goal is not confrontation but collaboration that produces results for everyone,” he said.
In a message of reconciliation, he extended an olive branch to his opponents and supporters alike, urging all students to put the election behind them and work together for the advancement of the institution.
“This is not a time for division. Whether we won or not, we are all stakeholders in the progress of FUOYE. I encourage everyone to remain united and focused on building a better student community together.”
Acknowledging the diversity of interests within the student population, Ajayi expressed confidence in his ability to manage disagreements through consultation, dialogue and timely conflict resolution.
He revealed that preparations for governance had already begun, assuring students that implementation of his agenda would commence immediately after inauguration.
“This marks the beginning of a new era. Students should expect a different kind of leadership, one that is responsive, inclusive and action-driven,” he declared.
The President-elect, however, emphasized that the success of his administration would depend on collective effort.
“I cannot do it alone. I need the cooperation, unity and support of every student. Together, we can achieve meaningful progress for everyone.”
Speaking on the legacy he hopes to leave behind, Ajayi said he desires to be remembered for fostering unity, raising standards and delivering measurable impact.
“I want my administration to be remembered as one that delivered impact, set standards and promoted unity, an administration that brought students together across all divides and ensured that progress was experienced by the majority, not just a few.”
