Barely days after successfully conducting its maiden matriculation ceremony, the Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has unveiled an ambitious vision to emerge as Nigeria’s fastest-growing distance learning programme, driven by innovation, accessibility, and a commitment to delivering quality university education beyond the traditional classroom.

The declaration was made by the Director of the Institute, Dr. Lere Omolade, during an interactive session with the Directorate of Public Affairs and Communication (DIPAC) following the historic matriculation ceremony held recently.
Describing the event as a defining moment in the university’s history, Dr. Omolade said the successful matriculation marked the formal commencement of a new era of flexible and technology-driven learning at FUOYE, positioning the institution among the growing number of Nigerian universities expanding access to higher education through open and distance learning.
“This matriculation marks a significant milestone in the history of FUOYE. Out of over 300 universities in Nigeria, only a limited number currently operate distance learning programmes. By joining this group, FUOYE has demonstrated its commitment to expanding access to quality university education through innovative learning platforms,” he said.

Dr. Omolade noted that the institute matriculated 72 students into its Bachelor of Science degree programme in Business Administration, describing the exercise as the official commencement of full academic activities at the institute.
He revealed that the newly admitted students are spread across different parts of Nigeria and beyond, including Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Abuja, and the United Kingdom, underscoring the programme’s growing national and international appeal. To ensure inclusiveness, the matriculation ceremony was streamed live via Zoom, enabling students from various locations to participate virtually.

The Director, Dr. Omolade commended the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, and the university management for their unwavering support, which he said was instrumental to the successful take-off of the programme.
On the academic experience awaiting the students, Dr. Omolade assured them of a world-class learning environment supported by state-of-the-art facilities and highly qualified academic personnel.
“The students should expect nothing less than the best quality education. FUOYE has invested significantly in modern facilities and technologies comparable to what leading universities across the world use for open and distance learning. We have deployed experienced facilitators, e-tutors, and lecturers to ensure that our students receive excellent academic support throughout their studies,” he stated.
Beyond academics, he explained that the institute has incorporated activities designed to foster inclusivity and strengthen the students’ sense of belonging within the wider university community.
Looking ahead, Dr. Omolade disclosed that the institute plans to introduce five additional programmes in the next academic session. The proposed courses include Accounting, Computer Science, Criminology and Security Studies, Public Administration, and Mass Communication.
He noted that the expansion would significantly increase student enrolment and contribute to the university’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), with projections indicating that the institute could attract more than 500 students in the coming session.
The Director also revealed plans to extend the institute’s reach across more states in Nigeria and into additional countries, positioning FUOYE as a major player in the global distance learning landscape.
Expressing confidence in the institute’s future, Dr. Omolade declared that the programme is poised to redefine distance education in Nigeria.
“FUOYE Distance Learning Institute will take the whole country by storm and blaze the trail as the fastest-growing distance learning programme in Nigeria within a very short period,” he said.
