    Again, FUOYE shines at Jos 2024, emerges winner of NGS competition

    …as Prof Ojo re-elected NGS council member

    Nigeria’s fastest-growing university- Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has emerged as overall winner at this year’s Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society Annual International Conference & Exhibition.

    Tagged Jos 2024, FUOYE team dusted other universities to clinch the coveted overall winner of the Inter-Varsity Geoscience Challenge Bowl, with the University of Jos and Aliko Dangote University of Science & Technology, Kano as 1st and 2nd runners respectively.

    The FUOYE’s Afolabi Mojibola Esther emerged as the Winner of the NMGS/Prof D. E. Ajakaiye Prize. Iroko S. Jesutofunmi and Taiwo A. Alalade won the NMGS President’s Special Recognition Award.

    The competition is renowned for shaping intellectual prowess and creativity of students from universities across the federation.

    However, FUOYE team demonstrated exceptional knowledge, team-work and determination throughout the competition.

    Speaking with FUOYENews, Professor Olusola Ojo,who led FUOYE team to the august event, said NMGS, Nigeria Mining and Geosciences Society, a professional body made up of about 8, 000 Mining and Geosciences professionals, dozens of specialist groups and students members just concluded its annual international conference in Jos.

    He said: “Among the activities were election into council, presentation of technical papers, inter-university quiz for undergraduate participants and award of various categories for excellence and recognition.”

    Besides, Professor Olusola Ojo of the Department of Geology Federal University Oye Ekiti was re-elected into the council as the Editor- in-Chief of the Journal of Mining and Geology.

    Another icing on the cake for FUOYE was winning the competitive NMGS/PROF. DEBORAH ENILO AJAKAIYE PRiZE for the best oral technical student presenter at the technical session of the annual conference.

    This was won by Miss Afolabi Mojibola Esther, who presented her B.Sc project which was part of the larger ongoing NRF sponsored research on the Petroleum potential of Bida Basin.

    Esther Bsc Project was supervised by Prof. Sola Ojo.

    Specifically, FUOYE shone at the inter- University competition, which was led by Mr. James of the Geology Department.

    The team which emerged overall best, won a cash prize of #500,000.00.

    Also, FUOYE’s twin sisters, Kehinde and Taiwo Alalade and Iroko Samuel, all of the Geology Department won NMGS President’s award of Appreciation for 2024 for providing digital interventions and support for the conference.

    Meanwhile, Prof. Ojo, a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor,( Academic) while extolling FUOYE’s academic prowess, said it wass evident that FUOYE was already a brand, endowed with experienced lecturers and students with capacity for learning and hold their own anywhere in the world.

    “Today, with the continuous participation in academic activities at various fora, it is not an overstatement that the Geology department is now a household name and a brand to beat in the Geosciences and Mining Community in Nigeria,” he added.

    He, however eulogised the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina for his outstanding performance in FUOYE, crediting the great achievement at Jos 2024 to him.
