Students of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) have again made the institution proud by performing admirably well during the Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (International. University Sports Federation) aka FISU 2023 competition which took place in Benin, Edo State.

It will be recalled that students of the institution have always performed admirably well in earlier inter-varsity sports and academic contests.

Hosted by the University of Benin, Benin, Edo State, the FISU 2023 edition had kicked off in May 8, 2023. There were first heat trials for all accredited athletes from various Universities invited.

Those who made it to the finals then had the rare opportunity to participate in the real competition.

FUOYE’s trio of Babalola Samuel, Egbe Promise and Sulemon Morenikeji Taofika and others took part in Judo, Athletics/race and Long Jump.

They outshined several athletes in the three games in both the trials and finals.

According to reports from the Chairpeeson sports Committee Prof. Chika Asogwa, a Professor of Mass Communication, and the Head, sports unit, Mr. Obajaja, in Judo, FUOYE athlete competed in the weight category with a FUTA athlete:” … in his fight he won and went ahead to make it to the final, At the final stage, he competed with a UNIPORT athlete whom he lost to and he eventually made a second position in the 66kg category,” they disclosed.

Giving further report, Mr. Obajaja said: “..On the following day, Athletics events of 100 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters commenced, the two athletes invited from FUOYE for the 100 meters race trials qualified in their various heats for the final. At the final stage, one of the two athletes in person of Babalola Samuel, a 300L of Mass Communication Department took the 4th position and Egbe Promise, a 300L student of Economics Department, took the 6th position out of the 32 athletes that participated.

“In the 200 meters, our athletes made it to the 2nd position in the heat and in the Long Jump, FUOYE’s Sulemon Morenikeji Taofika, a 100L Stream A student of Human Kinetics Department, took the 3rd position out of 20 athletes that participated despite not having facilities for her training. “

Prof. Asogwa and Mr. Obajaja observed that the recent outing in FISU is a remarkable achievement owing to the fact that FUOYE, being a very young institution is competing with several much older Universities and shining more than many of these institutions in the competitions. They therefore attributed the laudable development to the support of the amiable and progressively minded Vice-Chancellor, (VC) Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina and his management team, saying that the VC’s utmost commitment, dedication and strong desire to ensure the students excel in all ways, has been responsible for the Ivory Tower’s several successes on all fronts.
