The Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Sunday Adedini, has urged students to remain disciplined, focused, and committed to values that will distinguish them as worthy ambassadors of their institution and society at large.
He made this known during a student-focused programme organised by the Directorate of Counselling and Human Development Centre held at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Federal University Oye-Ekiti.
Prof. Adedini emphasised the importance of discipline, dedication, and responsible conduct in achieving academic and personal success.
The Professor of Demography noted that students must see themselves as representatives of their institution wherever they find themselves and should therefore uphold the highest standards of character and integrity.
Earlier, the Faculty Counsellor, Faculty of Social Sciences, Mrs Olayinka Idowu, in her open address, welcomed the Dean of the Faculty, Director of Counselling Unit, Professor Benjamin Omolayo, Guest Speakers and other members of staff in the Counselling Unit.
In her words, there are no shortcuts to success; achievement requires hard work, patience and learning from failures instead of looking for a quick way out, embracing the process, learning from your failures, and trusting that consistent efforts build the best foundation for your goals
“Here are a few ways to respond, depending on the vibe you are going for: Add value to yourself, that is to invest in your personal growth, building your skills, which allows you to be more capable and confident”, she added
The Faculty Counsellor advised the students to focus on smart work, emphasising effectiveness and efficiency in achieving maximum results with minimal waste of time and resources. She encouraged them to be strategic in their academic pursuits, prioritise important tasks, and develop productive habits that would enhance their performance and prepare them for future success.
Delivering her paper at the event, the Deputy Director, Counselling and Human Development Centre, Dr Adijat Adams, said, “It is my pleasure to be in your midst today. I hereby congratulate all the graduating students.
Graduating and entering the “world of work” is a major milestone in one’s lifetime. The transition from the classroom to a professional environment requires more than just a certificate. It demands practical skills, professional networking and a proactive mindset with a high level of integrity to contribute to your workplace sacrificially. You need all these to forge ahead to make a difference.
“A workplace requires delivering reliable results, meeting the organisation’s goals and promptness in problem solving. Coupled with these is your good interpersonal relationship with co-workers. Be a good team player with humility and honesty. Delivering your service with your best ability is highly essential,” Dr Adams said
“More importantly, consistency in good service delivery at the workplace will speak for you and open more doors of opportunity. Make your journey impactful; society is waiting for you all,” She added
Mrs Ibidunmoye Oluwatoyosi, in her presentation titled “Life After School: Evolving into Purpose,” challenged the graduating students to view life beyond the classroom as a journey of self-discovery, growth, and purposeful living.
She encouraged them to identify their strengths, embrace continuous learning, and remain resilient in the face of challenges.
“Success after graduation is not determined solely by academic qualifications but by the ability to align one’s passion, skills, and values with meaningful opportunities that positively impact society”, Mrs Ibidunmoye added
In his appreciation message, the President of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Akinteye Oluwafemi Joseph, expressed profound gratitude to the organisers, guest speakers, and participants for making the programme a success. He noted that the seminar provided valuable insights that would help students navigate life after graduation and make informed decisions about their future careers
Akinteye urged students to apply the knowledge gained from the programme in their academic and personal lives, stressing that discipline, purpose, and strong values remain essential ingredients for success in any field of endeavour. He also reaffirmed the commitment of the faculty leadership to initiatives that promote students’ personal and professional development.
