… as 7,684 graduands set for FUOYE Convocation

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Sunday Abayomi Fasina, has highlighted the completion of over 160 infrastructural projects and major academic milestones recorded during his five-year tenure just as the university prepares to graduate 7,684 students at its forthcoming 10th Convocation Ceremony.
The achievements of the Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina’s administration came to the fore on Monday February 2, 2026 , during the Pre-Convocation Press Conference held at the Council Chambers of the newly constructed Senate Building, Federal University Oye-Ekiti.
Addressing members of the press, Professor Fasina described the convocation as a significant moment not only for graduating students but also for assessing the university’s steady growth since 2021as the institution had experienced visible transformation in infrastructure, research output, academic expansion and global visibility.
Specifically, he disclosed that over 160 projects were successfully executed across the University’s campuses within five years, describing the achievement as part of what he termed the Blue Roof Legacy.
They were modern academic buildings, hostels, laboratories, the Senate Building, Freedom Park and other learning and research facilities.
According to the outgoing university helmsman, the infrastructural drive was deliberately aligned with academic growth, as more than 30 classrooms were constructed, new hostels added, perimeter fencing completed and landscaping undertaken to enhance safety and learning conditions.
Professor Fasina also announced that a total of 7,684 graduands will be awarded degrees and certificates at the convocation, comprising 7,396 undergraduates and 288 postgraduate students, reflecting sustained enrolment growth and institutional stability.
He added that the University recorded 131 First Class graduates, with Adeniyi Maryam Adedolapo of the Department of Anatomy emerging as the overall best graduating student with a CGPA of 4.89, describing the result as evidence of improved academic quality.
Highlighting financial sustainability, Prof. Fasina revealed that FUOYE achieved a 310 per cent increase in Internally Generated Revenue, which he said strengthened the University’s capacity to fund infrastructure, support academic programmes and improve staff and student welfare.
On research and innovation, Professor Fasina disclosed that the University attracted competitive research grants and equipment valued at over ₦430 million naira, alongside international grants, including a major award from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, positioning FUOYE as an emerging research-driven institution.
He further noted that the establishment of specialised centres and institutes, including the College of Medicine, the Institute of Food Security and Commercial Agriculture, and the Centre for Research, Innovation and Grantmanship, has expanded FUOYE’s contribution to national development and postgraduate training.
The Don also highlighted FUOYE’s rising global profile, announcing that the University ranked fourth in Nigeria in the Times Higher Education 2026 rankings, with strong performances in Impact Rankings, World University Rankings and Sub-Saharan Africa Rankings.
According to him, FUOYE’s inclusion in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject for Physical and Social Sciences further confirms the institution’s improving research output, teaching quality and international competitiveness.
Professor Fasina stated that academic staff development remained a priority, revealing that over 200 professorial promotions were recorded within the period, alongside structured capacity-building programmes for teaching and non-teaching staff.
He explained that deliberate governance reforms, digitalisation of academic processes and improved student welfare initiatives contributed to a stable academic calendar and peaceful campus environment throughout his tenure.
The Vice-Chancellor concluded by reaffirming FUOYE’s commitment to sustaining its growth trajectory through the implementation of its 25-Year Strategic Plan, urging stakeholders to support the incoming Vice- Chancellor as he believes, the new administration would consolidate gains recorded over the past five years.
