Emotion amidst mournful and gloomy faces rose on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at a commendation service held in memory of one of the finnes lecturers at the Faculty of Management Sciences, Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, Nigeria, Dr. Eniola Adekunle Sokefun, who passed away last week.

At the commendation service and Joint session of the Senate, emotion gave way as the university community which wore mournful faces, described death of the departed Head of Business Department, Dr. Eniola Adekunle Sokefun as shocking.

Dr. Sokefun, whose death occurred last week, was the Head of Business Department of the university.

Delivering his sermon, Chapel Council Chairman , Dr. Cosmos Agu, sadly said although Dr. Sokefun had completed his assignments here, “everything we do in life has consequences.”

“Late Dr. Eniola Sokefun has completed his assignment here on earth, this is a reminder to us here on earth to apply our hearts to wisdom and amend our ways,” he added.

Amplifying 2 Corinthians 5:1-11, Dr. Agu encouraged the congregation, family of the deceased hardworking Dr. Sokefun to take solace in God as the departed lived a short but fulfilled life.

He specifically said it was time we applied our hearts to wisdom as time waited for no man, saying Dr. Sokefun’s death was a call for self-examination.

He said: “God is taking record of every single activity done on earth whether good or bad. Be assured that our brother is resting in the bosom of our lord and this is because he died in Christ. Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

The service was held at the Faculty of Science Lecture theatre of the university where family, friends, members of staff and students came to pay their last respect to the departed Dr. Sokefun.

Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Babatunde Afolabi, in his tribute lamented Dr. Sokefun’s death, describing it as too sudden.

He said: “The sudden death of our friend, brother and colleague, Dr. Eniola Sokefun was a rude shock to the entire members of the Faculty of Management Sciences and the entire FUOYE community.

“Life is nothing but a short phase. You lived a fulfilled and exemplary life going by your immense contributions to the development of the Faculty as the HOD of the Department of Business Administration and your meritorious service to the university will forever remain indelible in our hearts.”

However, the Dean described late Dr. Sokefun as an industrious staff who always discharged his duties as and when due, “but the cruel hands of death snatched you …what a short life we live in? No wonder the Bible calls it vanity.”

He went on: “As a choir member of Ekiti Anglican Church Cathedral, Okesha, Ado Ekiti, your services attested to your commitment and faith in God which gave us assurance that you may be saying, please don’t grieve for me, for now I am free, I am following the path God laid for me. But humanly speaking, we would have wished it otherwise.

“We have no choice other than to accept that to be born is also to die and the Bible says that any one born of a woman is of a few days.

    “Adieu our Eniola.
Continue to rest in the bosom of the Lord till we meet to part no more.

You shall forever live in our hearts. Farewell.”
