The Students’ Union Senate Council 8th Assembly of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has demanded for an urgent punitive measures from the Governing Council and Management of the University, against the local branch chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU). Such punitive measures, according to them, will check what they described as: acts that are damaging to the reputation of the University”.
A press release signed by the students’ Union Senate’s 8th Assembly, reads in part:” The Students’ Union Senate Council (SUSC) of Federal University Oye-Ekiti, firmly upholds its commitment to safeguarding the reputation and integrity of our esteemed university. As students and future alumni, we recognize that the image of this institution will forever reflect on us and it is our shared responsibility to ensure that no individual or group tarnishes its legacy.
“Upon graduation, this university will remain our Alma mater—a source of pride and an enduring part of our identity. We cannot afford to stand by while actions are taken that threaten its image and standing. Our collective interest lies in preserving the dignity and respect of this institution, both now and for future generations.
“Regrettably, this is not the first time the Chairman of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has acted in a manner that undermines the university’s reputation. In 2023, SSANU’s Chairman initiated actions that culminated in the shutdown of the school, causing significant disruption to academic activities and tarnishing the institution’s public image. We lost a student on the grounds of the ruckus as the School medical centre was shut down and there was no access to medical attention. Though the university community appealed for calm, and the issue was eventually resolved, such actions left a stain on our institution’s record.
“Recent developments suggest a continuation of this troubling trend. SSANU’s Chairman has allegedly resorted to blackmailing the Vice Chancellor and the university through media channels, further damaging the institution’s reputation. These actions not only threaten the integrity of our university but also risk creating unnecessary tension within the academic environment.
“We, the Students’ Union Senate Council of Federal University Oye-Ekiti, urge the university management to take decisive steps to address the excesses of the chairman. It is imperative to implement measures that prevent further attempts to destabilize the university or tarnish its image. Failure to act promptly could result in a loss of trust, increased instability, and adverse consequences for the student body.
“As stakeholders in this institution, we must prioritize its well-being above all else. The SUSC stands resolute in its commitment to protecting the image of our university and ensuring a conducive academic environment. We call on the university management to act decisively, safeguarding the institution’s legacy for current students and future generations.”
