Sahara Reporters or Fake News Factory? The FUOYE Experience

Over the years, we have consistently monitored reports about Federal University Oye-Ekiti across different media platforms. One striking pattern is the way Sahara Reporters covers FUOYE-related news. Unfortunately, their reportage has almost always been negative—focused on controversies, exaggerations, and sensational headlines—while ignoring the incredible progress the University has made both locally and internationally.

This selective focus raises serious concerns. FUOYE is not a struggling institution but one of the fastest-growing universities in Nigeria. Today, it ranks as the 4th most subscribed university in the country, 12th in Nigeria in the world university ranking, and 38th in the entire Sub-Saharan Africa, according to Times Higher Education (THE). These are not mere statistics—they are testaments to the institution’s rising academic reputation and global recognition. Beyond rankings, FUOYE staff and students are winning multimillion-naira research grants, while our alumni continue to excel, making the university proud on international stages.

Yet, Sahara Reporters rarely acknowledges these achievements. Their silence on FUOYE’s progress and their obsession with negative narratives raise a fundamental question: Has Sahara Reporters become Nigeria’s homegrown “fake news” platform when it comes to FUOYE?

We must admit that “there is no smoke without fire,” but the excesses of Sahara Reporters cannot go unchecked. Their continuous portrayal of FUOYE in a bad light—as if it is the only university in Nigeria—suggests an agenda that is neither fair nor professional. If indeed there are insiders feeding false or exaggerated information to such platforms, they should be reminded that karma may be delayed, but it is never denied.

FUOYE is our Jerusalem—a city of pride, growth, and destiny. To allow outsiders, or even insiders, to tarnish the image of this institution is to undermine our collective future. The task before us is clear: we must brand and protect our university, highlighting its successes rather than fueling platforms that thrive on discrediting it.

This is a call for unity. FUOYE belongs to all of us—students, staff, alumni, and stakeholders. Instead of enabling those who drag its name in the mud, we must build the institution together, celebrate its wins, and defend it against narratives that do not reflect its true standing.
