FUOYE Don Earns International Recognition for Innovative AI Research

    By Chinedu Okafor

A lecturer in the Department of Software Engineering, Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), Mr. Joshua Bature Hassan, has earned international recognition after winning the Postgraduate Oral Presentation competition for his outstanding Innovative AI research

Hassan secured the top prize with his paper titled, “A Web Native Framework for Decentralized Speech Emotion Data Collection in Low-Resource Settings.”

The research was adjudged the best among competing entries for its originality, technical depth and practical relevance to emerging challenges in software engineering, artificial intelligence and applied sciences.

The conference, hosted by FUOYE, attracted researchers from different disciplines and institutions, with participants presenting innovative studies aimed at addressing contemporary scientific and technological challenges. The oral presentation session was sponsored by the International Center on2 Applied Mathematics, Data Analytics and Applications (ICAMDA).

As the overall winner, Hassan received the cash prize attached to the category, adding another milestone to the growing record of research accomplishments within the University’s Department of Software Engineering.

Speaking on what distinguished his presentation from other entries, Hassan said the study addressed a pressing but relatively underexplored challenge of collecting quality speech emotion data in environments where internet connectivity and centralized digital infrastructure remain inadequate.

According to him, the framework was intentionally designed as a web-native and decentralized system capable of running directly through web browsers without the need for heavy backend infrastructure, making it practical, accessible and scalable across diverse communities.

“I also focused on making the presentation practical and visual by demonstrating not only the theoretical foundation but also how the system works and the real-world problems it can solve. I believe the clarity of the problem, the novelty of the solution and its immediate applicability resonated strongly with the panel,” he said.

Explaining the significance of the research, Hassan observed that most speech emotion datasets currently used to develop intelligent systems originate from technologically advanced regions, leaving many low-resource communities underrepresented in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.

He explained that his proposed framework enables speech emotion data to be collected locally on users’ devices in a decentralized manner, thereby reducing dependence on constant internet connectivity, lowering infrastructure costs, enhancing data privacy and enabling researchers to develop indigenous datasets suited to their local realities.

The lecturer noted that the innovation could accelerate the development of speech and emotion recognition technologies for African languages, with practical applications in healthcare, education, mental health services and other sectors where culturally relevant AI solutions are increasingly needed.

Reflecting on his experience before the multidisciplinary panel of assessors, Hassan described the competition as both challenging and rewarding, noting that it required him to communicate highly technical concepts in ways that researchers from different academic backgrounds could easily appreciate.

“The questions challenged me to think beyond the technical aspects of the framework and consider issues such as ethics, scalability and deployment in real communities. It reinforced my belief that impactful research should not only solve technical problems but also connect with other disciplines where such solutions can make meaningful contributions,” he stated.

Hassan further described the award as a validation of the direction of his research, expressing optimism that the recognition would open opportunities for collaborative research, grant funding, scholarly publications and partnerships focused on speech technology, data privacy and artificial intelligence for development.
